Preview: Russian Art Week in London

This June Russian Art Week in London returns for what looks set to be another record breaking week of sales. The event was launched in November 2012 by Russian Art and Culture alongside participating auction houses and galleries, and has now become a major bi-annual event in the art world calendar. Although the auction houses have traditionally held Russian sales in June and November each year, this project has brought together commercial and academic participants to form an exciting new platform for exchange and debate on Russian art.

Vladimir Dukhovlinov: SPERANZA

18 January - 23 February

We cannot deny the magical and spiritual influence on the most representative currents of modern and contemporary art. Dukhovlinov’s exhibition Speranza (hope in Italian) focuses on the spiritual in art, which I always believed provided the first theoretical foundation for abstract art. Unlike Kandisky, who openly acknowledges that his art theories are based on the occult teachings of Helena Blavatsky, in his painting practice Dukholnikov embraces humanity, enlightenment, and salvation.

Philip Treacy: Hat over Heels

Irish born Philip Treacy is one of the best milliners in the world. Why? He has been working with the world greatest couturiers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen and Giorgio Armani. He has been awarded the title of British Accessory Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards on five occasions during the early 1990s. His fabulous hats are worn by the Royal Family’s ladies. Philip is a true artist, great personality and what is more surprisingly a big fan of Russia. RussianMind was extremely lucky to enjoy Philip Treacy’s extravaganza catwalk at the Royal Courts of Justice during London fashion Week 2012.

Andrey Gorbunov: Revision DNA

Erarta Galleries London is delighted to present Revision DNA by Andrey Gorbunov.  Marking a break with his earlier more painterly approach to image making, Gorbunov’s new work questions the relationship that links art and science and our lives with technology, asking if it is possible to assume that we are dealing with two opposing factors.  On the one hand, the positive and confirmed structure of scientific knowledge and the ordered binary coding of the internet, and, on the other, the intuitive nature of art produced by the irrationality of biological man.

Russian Symbols and Stereotypes

Foreigners have many stereotypes about Russian life. Alexander Dumas the Elder, a French novelist who managed to travel through Russia, may have paved the way for some of them. The author of Les Trois Mousquetaires (“The Three Musketeers”) described in one of his novels how he rested “under a patulous cranberry.” Actually, a cranberry is a very small bush that flourishes in Russia’s marshlands so it’s hard to imagine the author fitting under one and even harder to imagine him resting in a swamp! Since that time, the phrase “patulous cranberry” has become a Russian idiomatic expression meaning an incompetent or perfunctory judgement.
