Rose Wylie Exhibits in Moscow

For the first time UK-based artist Rose Wylie presents her solo exhibition in Moscow. Wylie is known for her large-scale, loosely-painted canvases made on unstretched surfaces whilst laid out on the floor or pinned to her studio wall, depicting a surprising range of subject matter culled from media imagery, international news stories, film narratives, ancient art forms and memories from the 77-year-old artist’s childhood. Before the exhibition, RussianMind spoke to Rose to find out her artistic vision of life:

RM: Your solo exhibitions have been staged in London, New York and Berlin. Why did you choose Moscow this time?

Sarah Fabergé: All About Surprises

Renowned House of Fabergé was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842 by jeweller Gustav Fabergé. It was his son Peter Carl who led the firm to worldwide renown and created the unique and precious surprise Easter eggs for the Imperial family. He won the favour of the Imperial Romanov family in the 1880’s and the adulation of the world with the award of the Grand Prix at the 1900 World Fair in Paris. In 1917, Fabergé production was terminated in Russia with the onset of the Bolshevik Revolution and their workshops were taken over by the Soviet government.

Vladimir Ovchinnikov: Between Realism and Surrealism

Vladimir Ovchinnikov is one of the most significant artists to emerge from St. Petersburg during the Soviet era. He is known for his paintings that blur the boundaries between realism and surrealism, fusing together contemporary Russian subject matter with magical, fantastic elements, often derived from myth and religion. His distinctively rotund, heavy-bodied, yellow-skinned figures have a primeval, statuesque quality, as if stemming from ancient monuments or religious icons – and yet at the same time his works also allude to social and political conditions, vividly satirising contemporary mores and puncturing the hypocrisy and spiritual bankruptcy at the heart of everyday life. His “Word-for-word”, the memoirs of Lilianna Lungina, shown on TV only after 10 years after creation, because of hurdles set by dull and short sighted television bureaucrats, was an unchallenged triumph.

On November 4, 2011 Dorman’s new film “Note” was released, telling the life story of the outstanding conductor Rudolf Barshai.

This year my company turned 20. During this period we’ve seen a lot of interesting and exciting times, but some sad things too. However, what really matters is that we are still together and we keep on creating new things. The biggest challenge is routine, as in a marriage. This is why it is crucial to focus on our goal. Understanding the direction gives you energy for every next step. And this is how we have been for 20 years – and we carry on walking. Some people may disapprove, but if we listened to them we would certainly lose our way.
